Black Cod with Chinese Mustard Sauce

Serves 2


  • 1/2 to 3/4 lb. Black Cod Steak 

  • 1 Tbsp. sesame oil 

  • 2 Tbsp. Shoyu (soy sauce) 

  • 1 Tbsp. mild honey 

  • 1 tsp. dry mustard 

  • 1 Tbsp. mirin or sake 


  1. Brush Black Cod steak with a mixture of sesame oil and 1 Tbsp. of Shoyu.

  2. Place over coals and grill for 7-8 minutes per side.

  3. Blend 1 Tbsp. Shoyu with honey, dry mustard, and mirin or sake. Let the sauce sit for 10 minutes, then taste; add more mustard powder if you like it very hot.

  4. Put sesame seeds in small bowl, then mustard sauce in another. Pass both with fish.
